Mike, having heard the whisperings of his grandmother’s faith, as upon his departure from his parents’ home she placed a Bible in his hands admonishing him to give it a special place in his life and heart. At first neglecting his grandmother’s admonition, Mike began a long downward spiraling path into a life without God and wrecked by sin and the futility that comes from it. At the point of despair with intentions of suicide to end his misery, he unwittingly decided to do precisely what the Lord wants each person must do in order to build a genuine faith of his own that will see him through all of life’s tempestuous seas – “seek God, if haply he may feel after Him and find him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27). Having seen God in nature in his youth during his wanderings in the woodlands near his Minnesota home, the echoes of that primitive faith caused Mike to seek a better understanding of the meaning of life through reading the Lord’s divine revelation, the Bible. Thus began Mike’s years-long ascent into ever-widening vistas of his own personal faith and an inseparable walk with the God he came to love with all his heart, mind and soul.
When Michael first related the story of his conversion in the early 1980’s, I was so moved and enthralled by it that I spontaneously and accurately memorized it upon its first and only telling to me, and I have retold it over and over again everywhere I have preached since then as a gleaming example of how one forms his own personal faith in God. I am thankful to him for putting his story into print so that it may gain a wider audience and assist each reader to critically examine and evaluate his own effort to construct a personal, genuine, living faith. I heartily recommend Mike’s book to anyone whose faith is shallow, or flagging, or one who wishes to attain the closest walk possible with the One who is the Captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ.
